Don Smit has been a barbershopper since 1967. He originally joined the
Society with the West Towns Chorus and was part of the music team and
Music Vice President when they won the International trophy in 1977 in
Hartford, Connecticut. He is a member of the Brotherhood of Harmony and
the West Towns Chorus. Don has been an active quartet man in the
Illinois District including quartets like Sound Reunion - Windy City
Limited – Four Members Only-Chicago Pride and Cross Town Connection.
Recently in 2009 Cross Town Connection won the Senior Illinois District
trophy, and then because two of the members moved to Florida they were
able to compete in the Seniors Sunshine District competition and also
took first place. Don has been the Assistant Director of the
Brotherhood of Harmony for the last two years and has been able to step
in when the director is out of town.
Don was also a recipient of the Directors Award
from the Brotherhood of Harmony in 2009 and has been Music Vice
President and on the Music team of the chapter for many years. He has
attended Harmony University in 2009 and 2010 with scholarships received
from the Barbershop Society. Don is the current Vice President of Music
and Performance for the Illinois District and has been directly involved
with the Illinois District Academy of Harmony for the last two years.
He also sings with his wife in the Village Voices in Downers Grove,
where he is the President, and in his Church choir and quartet. Don and
his wife Joyce live in Crest Hill, IL and have four children and eight
grandchildren. |
